As the seasons transition from Summer to Fall, we are often asked what we will be looking for this season. Well, look no further! I’ve compiled a list of what was supposed to be a perfectly titled, “Top 10 Trends of FW16” but is actually 12, because there truly is something here for everyone!
Whether you’re curious about what pieces to add to your wardrobe this season, what items you could potentially sell, or where you could shop for all of the styles below, this list is for you.
1.) The Cape
Classic and iconic, timeless and effortless. I really don’t need to sell you on this one, because the cape truly sells itself.
2.) School Girl Jumpers
This ones perfect for transition, and adding some colour to a sometimes mundane fall palette. (Not this season! Did you see Gucci?! That’s what I’m talking about!) Still not over wearing your favourite SS16 dress? Me either! Throw it over your favorite long sleeve, add some boots or pearls and it’s go time, girlfriend!
3.) Crossbody Furs
I saw a lady rockin’ this trend the other day on Alberni street and I thought, “Yes, she knows what’s up!” Mostly because it was way too warm of a day to be sporting a crossbody fur, but fashion. Worn best tucked into a belt over a coat. Slay.
4.) Fun Furs!
Out with the old, in with the new, faux real! This season we’re seeing patchwork, colour, texture and floral furs all in good fun! In my opinion, Derek Lam – you did it the chicest.
5.) ‘Not Your Grandmas Couch, But Maybe Your Grandmas Couch’ Prints
Because Miu Miu, Gucci & Lanvin did it, and they did it well.
When Vogue states, “Leopard is falls most powerful trend,” you know it’s going to be a jungle. We’re seeing it in the likes of skirts, pants, jackets, tops, accessories and shoes. When it comes to this kind of trend, you really can score big at resale shops! If there’s one thing you must add to your closet this F/W, let it be leopard. It’ll elevate your entire wardrobe!
7.) Menswear Inspired
Borrowed from the boys & Grandad plaids, if you will. The street-style set translated this onto the streets of fashion week from pinstripe to plaid. Make it your own by going bold in a full look, pair with contrasting plaids, or break it up over some denim. What are we wearing for footwear? Boots, oxfords, brogues, or a mile high heel.
FW16 presented us with metallics in full force. This trend works around the clock, and is best when purchased as a set for easy deliverables. Pair a metallic pleated skirt with a dress shirt for day, and swap out for the matching top at night. Long sleeve, short sleeve, midi, culotte.. make it metallic. If you feel like you’re from the future, you’ve nailed it.
9.) Apres-Ski Sweaters
This is where it starts to get fun! The answer to most questions this season is, “Put a sweater over it!” Leather skirt? “Put a sweater over it!” Floor length, tiered, tulle Chloe gown? “Put a sweater over it!” Be so sweater-chic that people don’t really know where you’re going or where you’re coming from. In all honesty, I’ve googled that Versace sweater enough times that it keeps haunting me in the form of every advertisement and pop-up known to this computer. I’m considering putting a sweater over it.
10.) Puff Daddy
This is the craziest trend that combines it all together while still making sense. We’re seeing velvet and navy puffers paired over metallic pleated skirts at Stella McCartney (what can’t that woman do!). Chanel keeps it chic in a calf length cream version whereas Balenciaga and Acne are taking it to the next level with their off the shoulder style. Not so practical, but I’m certain I need one.
If leopard is falls most powerful trend, then velvet is falls most powerful fabric! It was really due for a strong comeback, and I’m loving the contrast of vibes it carries throughout the collections. I’ll be keeping a close eye out for velvet everything! Loafers, boots, jackets, skirts, dresses, pants – I can’t wait to see what your closets entail!
12.) Navy Overcoat
Let’s sail into our final trend with, “The New Nautical.” This is a trend that seems to repeat itself more often than not, but when it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Tommy Hilfger, Tibi, Prada and Mulberry each did a piece that was classic but showed their aesthetic and that’s not always easy to do.
I hope this gives you a good insight into what we will be looking for this season and inspire you for the season ahead! As always, we base on style and quality more than anything else. We will always be looking for amazing staple pieces and if you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop us a line!
Have something that you think we should take a look at? Bring it in on any Wednesday, Friday or Saturday from 11 – 7 (no appointment necessary) and we would be more than happy to take a look!
